What is Nursing Informatics?
As defined by the American Nurses Association (ANA) and recommended by HIMSS, nursing informatics “is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice."
Nursing informatics combines both clinical and technical languages of healthcare to innovate and promote improved patient outcomes and optimized clinical workflows.

HIMSS U.S./North America Nursing Informatics Community
The HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community is an active group convening thousands of HIMSS individual members with a role in nursing informatics. Its purpose is to articulate a cohesive voice for the HIMSS Nursing Informatics community and to provide domain expertise, leadership and guidance to HIMSS activities, initiatives, and collaborations with the global nursing informatics community.

HIMSS Europe Nursing Informatics Community
The HIMSS European Nursing Informatics Community was launched in June, 2019, during the HIMSS & Health 2.0 European Conference in Helsinki, Finland. HIMSS, together with the Finnish Nurses Association and under the frameworks of the HIMSS Partner Innovation Exchange launched the “HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community - Europe” with the vision to make a step forward in clinically led healthcare transformation. As Europe’s first community devoted solely to a distinct segment of the workforce, the Nursing Informatics Community is ambitious in supporting nursing professionals from across Europe with resources required to lead the next wave of digital healthcare transformation.

HIMSS Nursing & Midwifery Informatics (England) Network
HIMSS Nursing & Midwifery Informatics (England) Network launched on October 1, 2019 in London, UK, is a long-term initiative aimed at promoting the role of nurses and midwives in implementing information technology to enhance nursing and midwifery workflow, promote patient safety and yield outcomes that improve patient care. This collaborative, multi-faceted initiative combines components designed to enhance the professional abilities of nurses and midwives to transform the delivery of healthcare and to achieve better patient outcomes through the utilization of nursing and midwifery informatics. This initiative falls within the framework of the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community in Europe and is the first local representation of its kind.

How Can Members Participate?
Nursing Informatics Education and Networking Task Force
The task force provides access to valuable learning and networking opportunities, including:
- Webinars: Explore and learn about today’s most pressing topics and earn continuing education credit.
- News: Receive communications with the latest nursing informatics news, research, events and education.
- Publication: The Online Journal of Nursing Informatics (OJNI) covers all areas of nursing informatics. It is a free, international, peer-reviewed journal published three times a year.
- Resources: Thought leaders and industry experts provide insight and share their research findings in nursing informatics related topics.
Apply to be a committee member
The HIMSS Nursing Informatics Committee, compiled of industry experts from around the world, provides expertise, leadership and guidance within the specialty. The committee is an exclusive benefit for eligible HIMSS nurse members. Applicants are selected during our annual Call for Committee Volunteers. Positions are available on a two-year rotation for HIMSS members in good standing.

Join a Task Force
Members of the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Education & Networking Task Force develop and host educational webinars and networking opportunities. The task force values diverse perspectives and encourages varying viewpoints, facilitated through a respectful exchange of ideas among all individuals involved.
