So, can we chat about Audiobooks for a quick sec? Who else has started listening to audiobooks > reading? *Raises hand*
As much as I adore reading and cozying up in a corner chair for an afternoon, I find myself never having the time anymore, but I still enjoy escaping into a suspenseful story or feeling connected to a heart-gripping memoir. That’s where Audible comes in.
Tony recently got both the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot and we downloaded Audible. It’s been amazing because while I’m baking in the kitchen or writing blog posts, I can listen to a story and feel like I’m actually there. The narrators do a wonderful job at making each book come alive, and through your imagination, you can envision yourself within each storyline.
Another reason I LOVE Audible is because I can pick motivating and inspirational books that help me envision my goals, realize how far I’ve come, and what I need to do to get where I want to be. I’m a huge proponent of self-love books; books that make you FEEL GOOD inside.
Recently Audible came out with a list of their top audiobooks from 2016. Have you read any of these?! I just put a few more on my list. If you’re interested in checking out Audible, you can get a free 30-day trial and get a free audiobook — sign up here!
Now here are MY personal favorite audiobooks from 2016:
1. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi: A memoir about a 36 year old neurosurgeon who is diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Paul asks the question, “What makes life worth living in the face of death?”
2. The Power of Vulnerability: Teachings of Authenticity, Connection and Courage by Brene Brown: Brene Brown is one of my favorite motivational authors. This audiobook teaches you to connect with your vulnerabilities and open yourself to new experiences in hopes that you will bring more purpose and meaning to your life.
3. Present over Perfect: Leaving Behind Frantic for a Simpler, More Soulful Way of Living by Shauna Niequist: Oh my goodness this audiobook is amazing. I found myself taking notes as I listened while I worked away. Sometimes we get so caught up in our day to day ‘must dos’ that we forget to take a deep breath and appreciate the life we do have, including our connections and relationships.
4. Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult: Aw Jodi! She’s also one of my favorite authors by how well thought out and rich her books are. This particular one is about race, privilege, prejudice and compassion. Check it out!
5. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr: Tell me you’ve read this book. If not, you should absolutely give it a listen! You will fall in the love with the characters and the story inside the Nazi party.
6. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah: Set in France during WWII, this story follows two sisters as they fight against the Nazis in very different ways. Incredible!
7. Life Without Ed by Jenni Schaefer: One of the best books I listened to whenever I’m having trouble with my eating habits. I used to suffer from an eating disorder and this book was a HUGE help in comforting me during those oh so uncomfortable and guilty times. Highly recommend if this is something you struggle with. Listen to it anytime you need a little inspiration.
8. Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis: This IS INSANELY GOOD and very enlightening. While sad at times, I feel it is critical to listen to, especially after the most recent election. SERIOUSLY EVERYONE LISTEN TO THIS!
Okay, that’s all I’ve got for you. What were some of your favorite books you read in 2016? I’d love to hear them in the comments below!
