When Tony and I used go to out the movies I always found myself always bringing my own snacks. That’s probably not much of a surprise though. Every once in a while we will splurge on the movie popcorn, but usually, I have a purse packed with my favorite coconut oil and sea salt popcorn, plus a few of these paleo chocolate chip cookies.
Guys, they are RIDICULOUSLY GOOD. Think addicting, thick, chewy, and full of melted dark chocolate puddles. They’ve been an AK reader favorite for 8 years now and YOU NEED THEM.
I had baked these bad boys a few weeks ago, for probably the 150th time. They’re truly one of my favorite better-for-you cookies that still taste just as amazing as the real deal.

What makes these paleo chocolate chip cookies healthier?
Even though I don’t follow a particular diet (and AK is full of recipes for all diet types), I love making paleo treats like these paleo chocolate chip cookies because they:
- Actually fill you up! Because the almond & coconut flours have a natural source of fiber and healthy fats, they keep you full and satisfied.
- Don’t need as much sugar as your typical dessert. A win for avoiding that sugar crash.
- Tend to be lower in carbs in case you’re watching your carb intake.
Ingredients in paleo chocolate chip cookies
Traditionally I’m not a huge fan of using several different gluten-free flours in one recipe. I want the ingredients to be both accessible and have many different uses. So far, almond flour and coconut flour have become my go-to’s when it comes to paleo baking. Here’s what you’ll need to make these paleo chocolate chunk cookies:
- Egg: you’ll just need one egg in this cookie recipe. I think a flax egg will work well, too, they’ll just be a bit more fragile, but you can bake them for a few minutes longer to help them set up.
- Vanilla extract: for that subtle sweet flavor.
- Coconut oil: we’re using a bit of coconut oil to give these cookies the perfect amount of moisture. You can also use olive oil, melted butter or melted ghee.
- Coconut sugar: these paleo cookies are naturally sweetened with coconut sugar! You can also use brown sugar if you’d like.
- Flour: the almond flour & coconut flour help keep these cookies paleo, gluten & grain free.
- Baking soda: to help these cookies bake up properly.
- Dark chocolate: I like to use a 3 oz 70-80% dark chocolate bar to create delicious puddles of chocolate, but feel free to use chocolate chips (even dairy free!)
- Coarse sea salt: I love to sprinkle a little coarse sea salt on the cookies for that amazing sweet & salty flavor.
Customize these paleo chocolate chip cookies
- Make them vegan. Try using a flax egg to make these cookies vegan! Just be sure to use dairy free chocolate chips or chocolate chunks as well and handle them carefully as they’ll be a bit more fragile. I typically let them cool completely on the baking sheet before removing them.
- Swap your oil. Feel free to use olive oil, butter or ghee in place of the coconut oil.
- Pick your fav add-ins. I love chopping up a dark chocolate bar to create puddles of chocolate in every bite, but you can get creative with any chocolate you’d like or even add nuts, or dried fruit.
Can I use all-purpose flour?
Unfortunately, no, I can’t recommend swapping the flour in this recipe as the texture will not turn out the same.
How to make paleo chocolate chip cookies

Mix the wet ingredients. In a large bowl, mix together your beaten egg, melted and cooled coconut oil, coconut sugar and vanilla extract. (Please make sure your coconut oil is cool!)
- Add the dry ingredients. Add in your two flours and baking soda, mixing well to combine and form a dough. Fold in dark chocolate chunks. You may need to use your hands to moisten the dough so that it sticks together well.
- Scoop & bake. Use a cookie scoop or large tablespoon to drop dough onto an ungreased baking sheet. Gently flatten the dough with your hand. Bake for 11-13 minutes, or until the edges are slightly golden brown.
- Garnish, cool & serve. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt and allow to cool on a cookie sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling. Then enjoy!
Storing and freezing tips

- To store: feel free to keep these paleo chocolate chip cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days, then transfer to the fridge or freezer.
- To freeze: make sure the cookies are completely cooled, and then transfer them to an airtight container lined with wax or parchment paper or a freezer-safe bag before storing them in the freezer for up to 2 months. I like to place them in a single layer to avoid any cookies breaking. Once ready to eat, simply thaw out at room temperature and enjoy!

125 Ridiculously Good For You, Sometimes Indulgent, and Absolutely Never Boring Recipes for Every Meal of the Day
Ingredients
- 1 egg, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup (56g) coconut oil, melted and cooled
- ½ cup (77g) coconut sugar
- 1 cup (112g) almond flour
- ¼ cup (28g) coconut flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 3 oz (85g) 80% dark chocolate, coarsely chopped*
- Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the egg, melted and cooled coconut oil, coconut sugar and vanilla extract. (Please make sure your coconut oil is melted and cooled!)
- Next stir in the almond flour, coconut flour and baking soda, mixing well to combine and form a dough. Fold in dark chocolate chunks. You may need to use your hands to moisten the dough so that it sticks together well.
- Use a cookie scoop or large tablespoon to drop dough onto ungreased baking sheet. Gently flatten the dough with your hand. The flatter you make the cookies, the flatter they'll bake. Bake for 11-13 minutes, or until edges are slightly golden brown.
- Sprinkle with coarse sea salt and allow to cool on cookie sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finishing cooling. Makes 12 cookies.

I love all your paleo recipes but am not a friend of the texture/flavor eggs add ( I know it’s not super obvious and noticeable but I generally bake vegan treats so do tend to notice a difference) Your double chocolate paleo bars worked super well with a chia egg (I ate those bars every chance I got!), do you think that would work here too? Hi! I haven’t tested them as a vegan recipe so I’m really not sure how they would work. I’m pretty sure the banana bread bars worked as they also had the banana to act as a binder. I’m not sure how these cookies would hold up, the egg not only stabilizes the recipe but also makes them nice and chewy. Let me know if you try it.

Could I use stevia in place of the coconut sugar? And if so, how much?
I don’t use stevia for baking because I’m not sure about it’s potential long-term effects. However, I know a lot of people who are diabetic due find it helpful. Let me know if you end up trying this recipe with stevia — I’m not sure what the ratios would be but I’m sure you could find a conversion chart on Google perhaps?
I just made these with Stevia. I replaced all coconut sugar with about 1/2 tsp Sweet Leaf Stevia powder then tasted the batter before I divided & baked. I added just a hint more stevia because (true confessions) I LOVE SUGAR! I also went heavy on the vanilla because really, stevia has a little bitter aftertaste and the vanilla helps cloak that. These are delicious. I am expecting that the swap brings the caloric value of the cookie down by approximately 30 calories/cookie if the bath made 12. I only got 10 after sampling a few spoons (heaping) of the batter.
I just made this recipe using Xylitol and it worked great! I get migraines from coconut sugar and prefer not to use cane sugar. Thank you!!

Hi Tamara, I don’t think that’s an option. Changing the recipe in any way shape or form can alter the final result, and I would not recommend leaving out coconut flour.
Is the dough good? I have tried so many coconut flour recipes lately and found the texture was so gross. I’m willing to give them a try.

Rebecca, try Amazon.com to buy the almond flour for less. I bought a 1-pound bag for $13.49 still not cheap, but better than at my local grocery store.
I tend to buy from Aldi when I need some, they do ground almonds for £1.39 for 180g.

That’s tough. I haven’t tried anything else but almond and hazelnut flour in this recipe, and changing the ingredients may alter the results of the recipe. Sorry!
Casava or plantain flours have substituted just fine for me on a 1:1 bases for nut flours.
Keep in mind that has always been for savory dishes I have never tried it in THIS recipe, you may want to make half a batch (maybe use the other half of the egg to test another recipe?) to see if you need to adjust any of the other ingredients.
Oh, wow. These are GOOD. I made them exactly as is. First, I couldn’t stop eating the dough (which is bad because I’m pregnant and there is raw egg). I just had my first one and I am going back for another. Love how these are healthy to help keep my pregnancy weight gain in check, but also totally craving satisfying! Did you use the almond meal/flour from Trader Joes or did you use a finely ground almond flour (like Bob’s Red Mill)? Would both work in this recipe?
I have tested the recipe with both almond meal and almond flour. It works either way.

These turned out amazing. We veganized them by using 3 tbs of aquafaba in place of the egg. I have to admit, they were all gone within minutes, like a proper chocolate chip cookie should be. LOL.

Just put the cookies in the oven. I used about a tablespoon of dairy-free butter (olive oil based) becuase I was just slightly low on coconut oil. But they look and smell delicious!!! Hello. This was my first time making a paleo/gf cookie. They came out pretty tasty but are a little too coconut-y for my liking (I think maybe I used too much coconut oil, which I will adjust next time). However, something might have been off with my dough overall b/c it was brown in color, not light like yours. Maybe I just need to use a little more almond flour & a little less coconut sugar, but I welcome any thoughts/suggestions you have. I will definitely be trying again. Thanks!

I made these yesterday and they turned out SO good. I subbed the coconut sugar for raw honey and they didn’t turn out as tall but they were still so so yummy. The best paleo cookie I’ve ever had.

I love this recipe! Super easy and so healthy! Protein packed, so I make them for my kids when they have long days of activities. After making the first batch as-is, I wanted to add some more…flavor. I just made these subbing applesauce for the coconut oil, raw honey for coconut sugar, and raisins for the chocolate. Omg SO GOOD! My batter was a little soft due to the changes in ingredients so I added a few extra TB of coconut flour. Much lower in fat and calories if anyone was looking for a lower calorie option.

I just made these and the dough was WAY more wet than yours. I double checked all the amounts and everything looked good. I wonder if it’s because I’m in AZ and everything is just so much hotter / more melty?? It also could have been because I scooped then leveled the flours into the batter, so maybe it was slightly less flour / more air? Did you do that? Maybe I used a larger egg? I’ve made these numerous times now after a friend recommended them, and they are fantastic!! I wouldn’t say they’re a healthy substitute to normal/traditional chocolate chip cookies because they’re not quite the same. Rather, I’d say these are in a different category: much more moist, rich with hints of coconut that do not overpower the cookie, and an excellent satiation for the carb- and sugar-wary sweet tooth. Be sure to at least double the recipe because 12 cookies will NOT be enough!

OMG I made these today! I finally found chocolate chips in the store that are gluten free and didn’t have soy lecithin in them (ENJOYLIFE). They even taste good! I searched the entirety of the enter webs until I found this recipe, It is amazing that there are people like Monique out there in their test kitchens experimenting with all of these whole food ingredients! I love cooking but I grew up with Betty Crocker and most of these ingredients are not interchangeable. You have to relearn everything. I don’t have time or money for mistakes. The number one ingredient in the Trader Joe’s chocolate chunks is cane sugar. This is NOT paleo!!!
These are great! I do a lot of gf baking but usually use a gf flour mix (like Bob’s) so was curious about how these would be. Love them. Not too sweet (like so many desserts are) but definitely sweet enough. I used 1/2 butter and 1/2 coconut oil (because I like the richness butter adds, and was low on coconut oil) and texture was perfect (I love that they aren’t greasy like a lot of choc chip cookies.) And I doubled the recipe because when I make cookies I like to have lots! Toddler approved:-)

What is the best low carb low sugar chocolate bar to use in these? From a store? In a similar recipe I used 86% sugar free chocolate and it was horrible.
Hi Janet! Generally speaking the higher the percentage the lower the sugar and the more bitter the chocolate taste. I would recommend using 70-80% but not completely sugar-free!
Hi! This might seem like an odd question, but do you think I could bake / cook these on an electric griddle? 5 mins, then a flip and 5 mins more? I am thinking to try this at preschool and want a recipe that will cater to all children, with respect to food allergies / sensitivities or parents nutritional wishes. We don’t have an oven, just the electric griddle pan. Thoughts?
Hi! I’m actually not sure – the consistency might not hold up very well on a griddle unfortunately, so I would stick with an oven and pre-bake them!

OMG! To me, these are the “holy grail” of chocolate cookies and even better because they are paleo! They were so easy to make and better than the usual tollhouse recipe I grew up with. I chopped up the chocolate super fine so when it baked, the cookies came out into flat discs- which I happen to LOVE a cookie like that. So I was very pleased! The best part about paleo baking is that you actually get filled up and even though they are such delicious cookies, I was very satisfied after only eating two. With other cookies made with regular flour, I tend to overeat. Thank you for this recipe. It is absolutely going to be a keeper! I have a feeling this might be one of those recipes I have memorized after a while! 🙂

Isn’t there sugar in chocolate? That would make these non-paleo, right? Also, do you know how xylitol would be in this recipe? I’m border-line diabetic, so the less sugar, the better. I love xylitol as my sweetener, but I’ve yet to try it in baking, but I’d love to make some cookies that we can all enjoy. Thanks!
Dark chocolate is actually paleo! I’ve never tried using xylitol as I try to use all-natural sugars whenever possible. Let me know if you do try it in this recipe!

Thank you thank you thank you for posting this recipe! I’ve been struggling with food sensitivities and this was my first Christmas with the new lifestyle. I was really missing baking but then I found these cookies and they have completely satisfied my baking urges! I made them three times over the holidays (and a few times since), and each time I had to fight off the rest of my family to eat my share. I was worried that they would taste too coconut-y, especially because the batter does, but they bake up beautifully with an amazing texture. I’ve tried lots of chips, from Lily’s to my neighborhood grocer’s organic; I’ve added walnuts and pecans, too. Every batch has been luscious. Again, many thanks!

This is our favorite recipe for cookies right now. I’ve been making them for a year now and have done different things with them. I’ve used Pascha 100% chocolate chips to reduce sugar intake. And I’ve done 85% Paschas as well. I then found Lily’s chocolate chips, sweetened with stevia. Both are equally as good!
I roll some of them in shredded coconut too. I love coconut and my husband is not a huge fan. I use TJs brand coconut oil that does not have all the coconut flavor.
This morning I added some bacon bits to a few of the cookies. Yes bacon. And OH MY GOODNESS!

I really liked the flavor but they are so crumbly. They fall apart when trying to eat and I sort of choked on the dryness. Maybe I did something wrong but am thinking if I make them again, I should add more oil. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Made these last night and they turned out pretty great. I forgot to flatten them before I stuck them in the oven, so had to take them out and do it in the middle – oopsie! Absolutely delicious! I am dairy, egg and grain free so I made these with a flax egg and they turned out fantastic. I made a smaller size cookie so I was able to get 17 out of the batch of dough and I also used kosher salt to sprinkle on the cookie (I sprinkled it on after I pushed the cookie down and before I cooked them). These were great. I didn’t have coconut sugar, so I subbed in half honey, and half maple syrup… It worked perfectly. I just had to watch closely that the bottoms didn’t burn.

Wow! These taste so much like regular chocolate chip cookies. I am an avid baker and have been looking for something like this since I switched to low carb eating. Is it the combination of almond and coconut flour that keeps them from overspreading?

Made these last night. We’ve had a rainy evening here in NJ so the cookies were perfect with a cup of turmeric milk. I have made a mistake and measured out 1/2 cup of coconut flour instead of a 1/4 and it was too late to take it out.
I added 1 flax egg in addition to the regular egg in the recipe and it worked out just fine.

Coconut/Palm shortening works far better than the coconut oil (and has just as much health value). It makes a cookie that is less greasy, and more chewy, with more volume.
Can I use maple syrup instead of coconut sugar?
Yes but you may need to reduce the amount by a few tablespoons! Also make sure you let the cookies sit on the baking sheet for a bit after they are done cooking as maple syrup will make the cookies more soft.

Can you swap anything for the coconut sugar and coconut flour? I have monkfruit sweetner and xyitol and was wondeirng if I could sub one of those, and any other flours for the coconut flour
Hi! I haven’t tried using an alternative sweetener in these, so I’m not sure how much of either of those would work. I’d recommend sticking with the flours here, too, as the consistency will likely change with swaps.

I’ve made these a million times. I usually don’t have coconut oil or coconut sugar on hand so I just use butter and brown sugar. They are so freakin’ good, best GF cookies on the web. And so quick to make, I usually make it while I’m waiting for dinner to roast/simmer/etc. Even my hubby asks for them and he hates allergen-friendly foods. They soften up in the Tupperware overnight so I put them in the toaster oven for a few minutes to get the edges crispy again, and it’s like they were baked fresh. Hands down my favorite cookie recipe ever! I make it at least once a week and have the recipe memorized at this point. I use the 85% dark chocolate and sometimes add pecans or walnuts…either way, turns out perfectly every single time and they are just as delicious reheated (I store them in the fridge). Amazing!

This is my new favorite cookie recipe! Wow!!! Even my picky husband was like,”wow, you can definitely make these again” and was trying to convince the kids that they don’t want any. (The only thing I added which probably doesn’t make any difference is 1/4 banana that my daughter didn’t finish eating. Just mashed it up in there. A normal yellow banana, not overly ripe…so may add half a banana next time and see if it’s even more delicious, which I’m not sure is possible! Thanks for sharing!

I am always skeptical with almond flour but the coconut flour in this really offsets that flavor. Neither are too strong. The only tweak I made was butter instead of coconut oil. These were soft on the inside, but didn’t fall apart, and the edges were crispy. I WILL be making these often. Thank uou!

I was reluctant to go for a recipe that yields a healthier option by using coconut everything, but let me tell you it paid off for sure. This cookie was a hit all around. They came out perfect in every way and definitely hit the spot with everyone’s sweet tooth. They are soft and light, airy and chocolatey, filling and better than grabbing for a Chips Ahoy.

Wow! I just took a batch out of the oven and allowed to cool for ten minutes. Prepared as written but used olive oil and half a cup of Enjoy Life dark chocolate morsels. Baked 11 minutes. They are SO good! 😋 Moist and delicious. I sprinkled sea salt on top just before baking. I will be making these often.

These are FANTASTIC! Quick & easy to whip up a batch. The sea salt is DIVINE! I actually used a mix of paleo semi-sweet and white chocolate chips and they were a hit. I also used Anthony’s Almond Meal Flour (Natural Unblanched) and it worked great.

Hi! That doesn’t seem right, especially if you follow the recipe exactly as written. I suggest trying again. These cookies should not be crumbly.

These were SO easy to make and came out perfectly. I swapped the coconut sugar for monkfruit sweetener, because that’s what I had, and I used Lily’s dark chocolate chips…also added some unsweetened shredded coconut! The cookies had just the right amount of sweetness. I imagine that by using Lily’s chocolate chips and monkfruit, the carb/sugar count way is less too.

My bad….This is one of my first changes my diet. I was trying to avoid sugar so I used Monk Fruit brown sugar. I think that is a 1 to 1 ratio. My problem came from using the Lakanto sugar free chocolate chips. I would not use those again in this recipe. They are way too sweet. The choc chips really have an aftertaste. I will try using the 80% dark chocolate. I just used what I had on hand. The dough itself was very tasty.
Some things made with alternative sweeteners are actually much sweeter tasting than actual sugar, so I’d suggest avoiding if possible! Yes, feel free to use dark chocolate instead 🙂
WINNER, WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER!!! I’ve been testing low/no carb recipes for weeks and this is by far the best sweet tooth fix. I did not have coconut sugar so I substituted it with Swerve brand granular (same measure as coconut). It’s not a Tollhouse, but it’s pretty close in taste. Thank you!!!

Not really sure what happened to mine, but they would not hold together. I baked at 350 for 13 minutes, and waited for them to cool. I basically had to eat these with a spoon, but they tasted great!

Great recipe. This is so easy to make on a whim and too difficult to mess up. Back when I’d use butter and wheat flour (I don’t anymore I think diary/gluten triggers my IBS) I’d get different results everytime…did it rest..the butter is not the right texture…how many egg yolks..blah blah.
This recipe gets rid of all of that for me and is consistent and easy to customise.

These sound great for those who like chewy soft cookies – But what do you suggest for those who prefer crispy chocolate chip cookies? I have tried subbing coconut flour for wheat flour in my favorite recipe, and it was too dense for me – though my Swedish friend adored them!
I know I can use some almond flour and some millet or other grain-free flour – but what would you suggest for an all paleo crispy cookie? Thanks much!

Finally, I found not only a healthy, gilt free alternative for my four boys and I. There’s allergies in my family. It does kind of suck being allergic to milk because majority of stuff do have milk and for my sons eggs. You can tell for the consistency. Honestly in a weird way I am glad. It helps us eat clean majority of the time. Foods tastes way better. Our bodies are receiving not only energy but vitamins while eating a cookie. I can now say. Thanks that there is hope to for yummy 🍪 For the oil I used olive oil, and Enjoy Life dark chocolate chips 🍫, and for replacement of the 🥚 chia seeds. No useless hidden ingredients.

Yum! These are a postpartum, nursing necessity for me! Sadly I ran our of coconut sugar and tried to substitute with maple syrup. The result was “meh.” I wouldn’t recommend it and I will not make the mistake to run out of coconut sugar again! 😆

Gotdammit MONIQUE DOES IT AGAIN. I was making these (and I make probably 5 AK recipes during the week)and I was like no. These simply cannot work. I don’t understand how this is going to taste good. AND I’LL BE DAMMED. They were so M word, the chocolate with the nutty deep flavor of the coconut and almond flour was just *chefs kiss* and they were SO fast to make! I have made these about 100x so I feel I have a responsibility to comment and say how AMAZING they are! The only thing i would say is they usually only make about 9 cookies when I try to make them the same size as the picture, and it is really important to let the coconut oil cool so it doesn’t curdle! They are the BEST cookies!

I found myself truly impressed with these cookies. I don’t care for coconut flour. As such I had a lot leftover in the pantry and I don’t like to waste things. So, I figured i could give this a try to help use up some of that flour. These cookies are delicious. It was sooooooooo very hard to stop myself from eating more than one cookie. 100% recommend.

Hi! I haven’t tried reducing the sugar in these cookies so I’m not 100% what other adjustments you’d have to make.
These baked up GREAT for me! And, I live high elevation at 7,500ft. The only thing I changed was I added 1/2 tsp salt to the cookie dough instead of sprinkling on top, and I added an additional 1 Tbs of almond flour due to the high elevation factor, but not sure that was necessary. They taste great and look like a beautiful cookie that didn’t spread all over the place. I also let my paleo doughs rest in the fridge for about 30 min before baking; I find this to be very helpful. Thank you!

Really really good. I only had almond flour so I subbed it for the coconut flour. I also added 1/4 tsp of salt into the batter. Also, I used a good organic grass fed butter as I am paleo except for butter. These were soft yet chewy on the edges. I did giant cookies, next time I will do smaller ones so I can get a chewier cookie overall.

These truly are the perfect paleo cookie. The texture and taste are both perfect. My kids and I doubled the batch, and rolled half of the cookie dough balls in a mix of cinnamon and coconut sugar to make a snickerdoodle variation (per their request). OH MY GOSH. So good!! They are so gooey and delicious!! They did not spread much, so if that’s something you want, maybe look for a non paleo recipe. I’m sure she has a bunch on this blog! I added chia seeds for some crunch and texture and it made these SO much better. That tiny crunch makes all the difference. Definitely will be coming back to this recipe 🙂

The BEST cookies! We make these every week and nibble on them throughout. We sometimes use 70% chocolate if we can’t find anything higher, and that does make the cookies a bit sweeter but still delish.
